What’s a challenge you faced recently, and how did you overcome it?
Originally from Aita al-Shaab, a village near occupied Palestine, @mous_dk was raised in Beirut’s southern suburbs of Dahieh by a remarkable single mother. When he moved out at 19, Moustafa worked at @siplebanon, eventually moving into food & beverage consulting for spots like @neighborhoodbeirut and @sajstories, while developing his drag persona @latizabombe. Over time, he successfully built a safe space where he could express himself fully.
This changed overnight. After an extremist group attacked a queer-friendly bar in Mar Mikhael in 2023 where Moustafa was performing, his drag persona and personal identity were outed to the world. He holds my gaze as he recounts the events of the night. It’s easy to forget that we’re still surrounded by people who perceive diversity as deviance and seek to punish those who don’t mold themselves into their lines.
He feared for his safety and fled Lebanon for 3 months. When he returned in November 2023, he couldn’t leave his home without friends around for protection. “Without the support and love of my close friends and community, I wouldn’t have survived this experience, or stayed in Lebanon. They mean the world to me.”
But Moustafa didn’t shy away, he doubled down. He established more safe spaces across Beirut, co-founding projects like @ClubHeshikBeshik and @krushafters—inclusive party events where everyone is free to mingle and dance, no matter their gender expression or sexuality. “I won’t leave unless it’s my choice. I’ll stay for as long as I can, push my boundaries, and keep working on what I love.”

مصطفى، الذي ينحدر من بلدة عيتا الشعب القريبة من فلسطين المحتلة، نشأ في ضاحية بيروت الجنوبية على يد والدته القوية التي ربّته وحيدة. عندما انتقل للعيش بمفرده في سن 19، عمل مصطفى في @siplebanon، ثم دخل عالم استشارات الطعام والشراب، حيث تعاون مع أماكن مثل @neighborhoodbeirut و @sajstories، بينما كان يطوّر شخصيته الفنية كـ @latizabombe. على مر السنين، نجح في بناء مساحة آمنة يستطيع من خلالها التعبير عن نفسه بحرية تامة.
لكن هذا كله تغيّر بين ليلة وضحاها. في عام 2023، وبعد أن هاجمت مجموعة متطرفة باراً صديقاً للمجتمع الكويري في مار مخايل، حيث كان مصطفى يؤدي عروضه، تم الكشف عن هويته الشخصية والفنية على الملأ. ينظر إليّ مصطفى مباشرةً وهو يسترجع أحداث تلك الليلة. من السهل أن ننسى أننا ما زلنا نعيش في مجتمع يرى في التنوع انحرافًا، ويسعى لمعاقبة من لا يتماشى مع خطوطه المحددة.
خاف مصطفى على سلامته، وهرب من لبنان لمدة 3 أشهر. وعندما عاد في نوفمبر 2023، لم يكن يستطيع مغادرة منزله دون مرافقة الأصدقاء لحمايته. يقول: “لولا دعم وحب أصدقائي المقربين ومجتمعي، لما تمكنت من تجاوز هذه التجربة أو البقاء في لبنان. هم يعنيون لي العالم كله”.
ولكن مصطفى لم يتراجع، بل واجه التحديات بشجاعة أكبر. أسس مساحات آمنة جديدة في بيروت، وكان من المؤسسين لمشاريع مثل @ClubHeshikBeshik و @krushafters، وهي فعاليات شاملة تجمع الناس للرقص والتعارف بغض النظر عن هويتهم الجندرية أو ميولهم الجنسية. “لن أرحل إلا إذا كان هذا قراري. سأبقى طالما أستطيع، وأدفع بحدودي لأبعد مدى، وسأواصل العمل في ما أحب.”
