My story with Fairuz is one of a forgotten childhood, a story that began in the early morning traffic jams as we were being driven to school. We used to take the Aoukar-Antelias road every day and my father would listen to the national radio station. Its broadcast began with Fairuz’s morning songs. At the time, I did not have an appreciation for neither the quality of the music, nor the lyrics, nor the melodies, and despite my love of poetry, I grumbled about our daily Fairuz mornings. However, once I started high school, I became a little more acquainted with Arabic folk music.<\/p>

Upon joining the College of Fine Arts, my addiction to Fairuz began to grow and flourish. I would wake up daily to an Arabic melody that engulfed my dreamy little imagination. I didn’t learn about love and relationships from movies because in movies they are surreal and flawless. But on \u201dKfarhala road\u201d waiting for \u201cmy picnic with my beloved\u201d on \u201cthe paths of the wind\u201d, I learned to love, yearn, and wait while immersing myself in the words in front of me. Fairuz taught me to love people despite their flaws and made me understand that true love exists in the simplest of things, like in the sounds of forgotten cities or amongst the misty autumn trees.<\/p>\n

However, it is unfortunate that nowadays Fairuz’s younger audience don\u2019t necessarily listen to her music like generations before them. Whilst they enjoy doing this, it\u2019s in a way that resembles how Fairuz herself was on stage – reserved and over the top.

The night may have forgotten its poetry but no matter what, Fairuz has never forgotten a night without music. Fairuz, you are the life, the wanderer, and the inspiration of my everyday existence. You are the song that rises and shines with every day and you are every evening that awaits a written poem from a beloved stranger.<\/p>\n
