On a Sunday night, I received a DM on Instagram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Someone had just discovered my stand-up comedy. They liked it enough to message me and ask how they could book tickets for my upcoming show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

That message alone made me happy. A new audience member. A new face in the crowd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I replied, thanked them for reaching out, and was about to send the ticket link when another message popped up: \u201c But please don\u2019t have a <\/span>[specific female comedian]<\/span><\/i> as your opening act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I paused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Out of curiosity more than shock, I asked why.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The reply came quickly and casually: \u201cCan\u2019t tolerate her. Also, women are not funny.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The first one was personal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Why would someone feel comfortable sharing their hate toward a colleague\/friend with me? What was the expectation here? That I\u2019d reply with, \u201cHell yeah, totally agree, don\u2019t worry, we\u2019ll remove her just for you\u201d? As if comedians are menu items you can customize based on prejudice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

But the second problem was bigger. Much bigger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cWomen are not funny.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

This sentence isn\u2019t new. It\u2019s been floating around for decades, repeated by people who are fully convinced it\u2019s a fact, not an opinion. People who say it with confidence, as if humor has a gender setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

And that\u2019s the real issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

This isn\u2019t just an issue of personal taste or opinion about women\u2019s comedy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Comedy <\/span>is<\/span><\/i> subjective. What makes one person laugh might not work for another, and that applies to every artist, regardless of gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

You might not like a specific comedian\u2019s style. You might not connect with observational humor, dark comedy, political jokes, or crowd work. That\u2019s normal.<\/span><\/p>

But jumping from \u201cI don\u2019t enjoy this comedian\u201d to \u201cwomen are not funny\u201d is where the logic completely collapses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Comedy doesn\u2019t fail because of gender. And history is full of women who have proven this on every stage imaginable, from stand-up specials to sitcoms, sketches, and so on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

So no, this isn\u2019t about defending women comedians out of politeness or political correctness. It\u2019s about calling out a lazy generalization that ignores how comedy actually works and how humans actually are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Because the belief that \u201cwomen are not funny\u201d doesn\u2019t just live in comments or DMs. It quietly shapes behavior. I\u2019ve seen incredibly talented women\u2014sharp writers, natural performers, people with a strong comedic voice\u2014hesitate, delay, or completely avoid stepping on stage. Not because they lack ability, but because they\u2019re exhausted before they even begin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

They know they might be judged differently, only because they\u2019re women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

In a society that thrives on judgement, this kind of thinking raises the cost of trying. It turns the stage into a test women have to pass just to be allowed in, while others are allowed to fail their way forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

And that\u2019s how talent disappears, not because it isn\u2019t there, but because it\u2019s discouraged before it ever gets the chance to speak.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

So I went back to the DM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I sent them a link to my show, and they immediately booked their seats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
