Lebanese citizens are facing a movement of adaptation as a result of depletion of resources. A force of resiliency and creativity is being born within the Lebanese, to find their independence and separation from a failing system. This reform is fostering individuals, businesses, and organizations to take matters into their own hands and seek alternative ways to obtain their basic needs and rights as citizens. To \u2018Power\u2019 is an architecturally designed capsule as part of the Urbanists & Environmentalists working group civic reform proposal for the Beirut River: Portrait & Injection reform research and design. The act of birthing off-grid solar powered electricity for the sake of light, powering mobile devices, and communication was very necessary to consider as a result of findings extracted from the on-the-ground surveys with the residents. The residents reside in lower income communities and are exposed to inhuman deprivation of electricity. In the larger context, as studied in the sociopolitical mapping which superimposed ethnographies and surveys to a geographical document, the need for electricity was prevalent around the entire Karantina – Beirut River – Bourj Hammoud radius.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Civic change holds a vital element in the quest of how people are gaining independence from the state. For one, these innovative ideas and replacements towards electricity would not only provide ease in everyday activities, but also a sustainable and safer option for the environment. The power of having control and safety over basic needs helps heal trauma and stress that have been prevalent for over 20 years.<\/p>

Despite the simplistic understanding of what electricity does, Studio Madane emphasized the importance of using Power capsules to bring residents back to the public sphere. When a series of architecturally designed capsules have electricity, unsafe corners become safer ones. Unvisited urban plots become visited and gathered. Underserved piazzas become meaningful for gathering and exchange. Most importantly, the rights-based approach becomes in effect: would users start to question the absence of the resource to charge mobile devices and to connect to the digital realm from the comfort of their private spaces?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Community development cannot reach every person whose rights are stripped off of them. Without appropriate regulatory safeguards and government intervention, certain essential industries could fall into the hands of a select few, granting them disproportionate control over critical resources. Despite the actions being taken towards civic reform, people taking power means no reinforcement from the government and an increase in privatization. Also, it means that the state and those responsible for service provision will continue to take advantage of \u2018proactive\u2019 citizens. With no public resources and other options to basic necessities, Lebanese citizens will have to solely rely on private businesses. This can lead to a monopoly of resources or an elevation in prices. This could lead to a scenario where the most vulnerable members of society face grave hardships, struggling to afford vital goods and services, while a privileged few accumulate vast wealth and influence.<\/p>

In Cuba, a very low percentage of citizens have internet access. To tackle this, Cuba is now offering internet to 35 public places, providing Wi-Fi to the general population. Prior to this, the country had the lowest internet usage in the world.
